Overview

5G Edge Computing

Germany’s industrial 5G rollout — particularly private campus networks in manufacturing plants and logistics hubs — has opened up possibilities that Wi-Fi and wired networks simply couldn’t support: ultra-low latency, massive device density, and deterministic performance for time-critical automation. We design edge computing architectures that actually take advantage of that, rather than bolting 5G onto infrastructure that wasn’t built for it.

This is where mobile network engineering meets industrial automation, and the two disciplines don’t always speak the same language. We bridge that gap: network slicing, MEC (multi-access edge computing) deployment, and integration with existing OT systems that weren’t designed with wireless in mind.

Technical Approach

We build on private 5G and campus network deployments, using dedicated spectrum where available, combined with multi access edge computing architecture that places compute resources at or near the cell site rather than in a distant data center. This cuts round trip latency dramatically, which matters for applications like AGV fleet coordination, machine vision on the production line, and remote controlled equipment. We handle network slicing design, edge node deployment, and integration with existing plant IT and OT systems.

With 5G standalone coverage increasing every year, the practical case for edge computing has shifted from experimental to mainstream. Deutsche Telekom alone reports around 87 percent 5G area coverage, and overall mobile broadband coverage across the country sits near 98 percent, which means most industrial sites in Germany already have workable connectivity to build on rather than needing to start from zero.

Private 5G deployments involve spectrum licensing through the Bundesnetzagentur, and telecommunications infrastructure now falls partly under the amended Telecommunications Act provisions introduced alongside Germany’s NIS2 implementation, meaning network operators and, in some cases, their industrial customers carry security obligations for how these networks are built and monitored. We factor licensing timelines and these requirements into project planning from day one.
